The Peony Tee: A Flower Icon for People Who Do Not Wear Florals

Ivory heavyweight tee with a small embroidered peony on the left chest

Floral clothing has a problem. Either it is a full print, which is a lot, or it is nothing. There is very little in between for someone who loves one particular flower and would rather not announce it across their whole torso. The peony tee is our answer: one flower, about six centimetres across, embroidered on the left chest of an otherwise plain heavyweight tee.

Why the peony

If you had to pick one flower that people love disproportionately, it is this one. Peonies bloom for a few weeks in late spring and then disappear for a year, which is most of why they are adored. They are the traditional flower of the twelfth wedding anniversary, a symbol of good fortune and prosperity in China (where they have been cultivated for well over a thousand years), and the flower that florists say sells out faster than any other when it is in season.

In other words it is a flower with devoted fans, who can only have it in a vase for about a month a year. A small stitched one lasts a bit longer.

How we stitched it

A peony is a dense flower, all overlapping petals, and the risk with embroidery is that it becomes a pink blob. Ours is stitched in several tones of pink, with the petal edges defined so the shape reads as a peony from a metre away rather than a generic bloom. A short green stem anchors it. It is one of the most detailed icons we make and takes noticeably longer on the machine than a simple outline.

Colours and how to wear it

The Peony tee is best on Ivory, where the pink thread sits softly and the whole thing looks like it belongs. White is cleaner and more summery. Black is the surprising one: a single peony on a black heavyweight tee reads as deliberate and a little severe, which some people love.

Because the icon is small, the tee works with things floral prints do not. Tailored trousers. A blazer. Dark denim and loafers. The flower is the only soft thing in the outfit, which is what makes it work. There is more on this in minimalist outfits built around one small detail.

As a gift

A peony tee is a safe and slightly unexpected gift for anyone who buys themselves peonies, had them at their wedding, or has mentioned them more than once. Ivory in their usual size is the right call; the fit is relaxed and we swap sizes within 14 days. For a two-tee gift that ships free, pair it with a city they love or a second flower.

The other flowers

The Flowers collection has twenty, from the obvious (Rose, Tulip, Sunflower) to the more particular (Protea, Bird of Paradise, Orange Blossom, which grows all over our corner of Spain). If yours is not there, tell us at hello@insignee.com.

Keeping it sharp

Wash inside out at 30 °C, tumble dry low, never iron over the thread. Multi-tone embroidery is as durable as any other; it is the fabric that will soften first, and that is the point of garment-dyed cotton. Full routine in how to wash an embroidered t-shirt.
